Today, the Russian Institute of Theatre Arts — GITIS celebrates its 145th anniversary! On November 3, 1878, a private music and theatre school was opened in Moscow by the renowned Russian conductor and pianist Pyotr Adamovich Shostakovich. This school was later renamed the Musical and Dramatic School and entrusted to the management of the Moscow Philharmonic Society. It is from this moment that GITIS begins its history.
