A team from the GITIS Choreography Faculty has completed its work in Dakar as part of the international project “GITIS School Abroad.” The program included workshops, rehearsals, and the preparation of the production “Kirikou and Karaba” — a choreographic interpretation of a well-known African legend, created in collaboration with Senegalese artists.
The students were accompanied by Maksim Valukin, Professor of the GITIS Choreography Department and Candidate of Art History.
Over the course of several days, an intensive exchange of experience took place.
Professor Valukin and GITIS students led a classical dance workshop for Senegalese performers. The class became part of an extensive educational program that brought together dancers of different schools and techniques.
In return, dancers and choreographers of a local company conducted a workshop in Senegalese dance, giving GITIS students the opportunity to immerse themselves in African movement vocabulary and the specifics of national choreography.
The final day of the program concluded with a showcase performance at the Grand Theatre of Senegal.
The School in Senegal is held within the framework of the “GITIS School Abroad” project with the support of the Ministry of Culture of the Russian Federation. GITIS expresses its gratitude to the Grand Theatre of Senegal and the Russian Center Kalinka.
